A Chalet on Mount Everest: Interpretations of Wittgenstein’s Remarks on Gödel
نویسنده
چکیده
This thesis offers a critical overview of the debate on Wittgenstein’s remarks on Gödel. These remarks—which have since their publication been the source of much controversy—were said by early commentators to show that (a) Wittgenstein did not understand the role consistency plays in the proof of Gödel’s theorem and logic in general, and that (b) he mistakenly thought that a natural language interpretation of the Gödel sentence was necessary to establish the incompleteness of Principia Mathematica. Later commentators have been more sympathetic to Wittgenstein’s remarks and have with few exceptions denied both claims. We examine their interpretations and evaluate their cogency and exegetical value.

On Floyd and Putnam on Wittgenstein on Gödel
In a recent discussion piece, Juliet Floyd and Hilary Putnam present a new analysis of Wittgenstein’s “notorious paragraph” on Gödel’s first incompleteness theorem. Textually, they claim that Wittgenstein’s remarks have been widely misunderstood, and they argue that Wittgenstein had a better understanding of Gödel’s theorem than he has often been credited with. Substantively, they find in Wittg...
متن کاملEffects of age and gender on success and death of mountaineers on Mount Everest.
Increasing numbers of climbers are attempting Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth. We compiled interview data and computed the probabilities of summiting and of dying as a function of climber age and gender (2211 climbers, spring season) for the period of 1990-2005. Men and women had similar odds of summiting and of dying. However, climbers older than 40 years have reduced odds of summ...
متن کاملTacit knowledge, rule following and Pierre Bourdieu’s philosophy of social science
Pierre Bourdieu has developed a philosophy of social science, grounded in the phenomenological tradition, which treats knowledge as a practical ability embodied in skilful behaviour, rather than an intellectual capacity for the representation and manipulation of propositional knowledge. He invokes Wittgenstein’s remarks on rule-following as one way of explicating the idea that knowledge is a sk...
متن کاملReal-Time Electrocardiogram Transmission from Mount Everest during Continued Ascent
The feasibility of a real-time electrocardiogram (ECG) transmission via satellite phone from Mount Everest to determine a climber's suitability for continued ascent was examined. Four Taiwanese climbers were enrolled in the 2009 Mount Everest summit program. Physiological measurements were taken at base camp (5300 m), camp 2 (6400 m), camp 3 (7100 m), and camp 4 (7950 m) 1 hour after arrival an...

In their 2000 paper, “A Note on Wittgenstein’s ‘Notorious Paragraph’ about the Gödel theorem,” Juliet Floyd and Hilary Putnam present a new analysis of Wittgenstein’s “notorious” remarks on Gödel’s first incompleteness theorem. A substantial portion of this analysis focuses on the following key claim. Let “P” be the “I am not provable” sentence from Gödel’s proof of incompleteness, and let “PM”...
